Reflect with us:

Today's reading is 1 Kings 1-2, Psalm 37, 71 and 94. Here's what stood out to me:

Knowing his father was older and unable to physically stop him, similar to Absalom, Adonijah, another one of David's sons, began somewhat of a rebellion. Even though he knew Solomon was supposed to be king, Adonijah exalted himself as the next king. Luke 14:11 tells us, "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." And since the LORD told David Solomon would be the next king, humbled is where Adonijah found himself!

And all the while, yet again, we see Joab on the opposite side of David. Most definitely not the loyal commander you'd hope him to be.

David's final words to his son Solomon were conflicting. On one hand, he tells Solomon to keep the LORD's commandments and follow after Him, but then he tells him to seek revenge on the men who wronged him. In the end, Solomon does carry out his father's requests, but as Tara Leigh said, possibly they were seen as lawful punishments.

Psalm 37 has some action steps...trust, delight, commit, and be still.

When we trust in the LORD we are able to delight in His goodness and faithfulness. When we commit to Him, we only need to be still and wait for Him to establish our steps.

Despite his constant trials, David continually praised the LORD. He found his hope in Him, and because of that, he praised Him "yet more and more." He is worthy to be praised!
