Reflect with us:

Today's reading was Genesis 16-18.  Here's what stood out to me:

Even after the Lord promises Abram's offspring will be as numerous as the stars, Sarai grows impatient in the waiting and comes up with her own plan. Not only that but she accuses the Lord of preventing her from having children. 16:1-3 Do I fully trust God in the waiting?

After Hagar does what Sarai asked of her Sarai then treats her horribly...possibly due to regret and jealousy. 16:6 Doing things her way didn't solve her crisis, it only created more problems and heartache.

I'm grateful for verses 16:7-15. Even though Hagar was part of a plan (whether by force or choice) that was not condoned by the Lord, He didn't abandon her but showed her mercy and grace. In a time when she probably felt very alone she said, "You are a God of seeing."

In Chapter 17 the Lord again appears to Abram and this time he makes an everlasting covenant with him.  He evens changes his name to Abraham and says he will be the father of a multitude of nations! He promises to give his offspring land and to be their God!  This covenant does begin with a condition though, verse 1 says "walk before me, and be blameless."

God again tells Abraham that Sarah will give birth to a son...Abraham is now 100 and Sarah is 90...so Abraham falls down laughing. 17:17 Abraham hints at Ishmael possibly just becoming the heir and being blessed instead but God's plan involves Isaac because His plan eventually leads to Jesus!

Sarah also laughs when the Lord tells her she will have a son. His response..."Is there anything too hard for the Lord?" 18:12-14 Friends I am oh so grateful for this verse!

Abraham pleads with the Lord to spare the people of Sodom...he's most likely thinking of Lot his nephew. Eventually after going back and forth with Abraham, the Lord promises "for the sake of ten I will not destroy it." 18:33
