Reflect with us:

Today's reading was Genesis 19-21.  Here's what stood out to me:

There are definitely some difficult accounts to read in these next few chapters...Lot seemingly unphased at the thought of sacrificing his daughters' virginity to a crowd of men 19:8 and then the fact that Lot's daughters take advantage of him. 19:32-38 It's important to remember that God's Word is both descriptive and prescriptive and because we know God's character, we know He is not condoning these actions.

Why do you think Lot would want to stay in a place where he was literally surrounded by wickedness...so much that the Lord couldn't even find ten righteous enough to spare it? Do you think it was because he had become so comfortable or that the land was so prosperous and he was wealthy? I definitely believe he knew of the wickedness because when the angels came, he pressed them not to stay in the town square and suggested they leave early in the morning and be on their way. 19:1-3 Also when the angels tell him they are about to destroy the cities Lot doesn't try to bargain with them or talk them out of it. 19:13-14

Verse 19:16 even says Lot lingered but God, being merciful, allowed the angels to take Lot, his wife and his daughters by force to get them out and spare their lives. However, Lot's wife disobeyed the angel's command not to look back and turned into a pillar of salt. 19:26

As I mentioned before, the end of chapter 19 documents Lot's daughters' unwillingness to wait and see how the Lord provides and instead they take advantage of their father to get what they want. Sin doesn't remind us of who we may be hurting in the process instead it just entices us with something we think is better.

Abraham repeated his deceit and claimed his wife is his sister yet again. Only this time when he's caught he tries to get out of it on a technicality. 20:2-13

Isaac is born and Sarah asks Abraham to kick Hagar and Ishmael out of the house...even though Sarah was the one who created that scenario. 21:10 Abraham is reluctant to make them leave but God promises to make a nation of Ishmael because he is Abraham's son. 21:13

Even though Abimelech was a pagan king he recognized God was protecting Abraham and enters into a peace treaty with him to protect himself and his descendants. 21:22-24

We've begun to see it but there will continue to be a repeated theme of God's people growing impatient in the waiting and unsuccessfully handling circumstances by their own means.
