Reflect with us:

Today's reading was Genesis 25-26.  Here's what stood out to me:

A couple of God's promises were fulfilled in these chapters. Abraham died in a good old age (175 years) 25:8 (promised in 15:15). And Ishmael's 12 sons were all princes 25:16 (promised in 17:20). God is a Promise Maker and a Promise Keeper. What He says He fulfills. What an encouragement to us all!

Rebekah, like Sarah, was also barren but God opened her womb and allowed her to have children. 25:21 Two barren women were part of God's plan that led to Jesus!  I think that's fascinating! God uses the most unlikeliest people to accomplish His will.  It shows me that NOTHING can keep His plan from coming to fruition and that it's not the people but His power working through the people!

Right off the bat the Lord let Rebekah know her sons would have conflict with each other. And that the older would serve the younger. 25:23 I thought it was so interesting that Tara Leigh pointed out this theme in Scripture...Abel's (youngest) offering was accepted while Cain's (oldest) was not, and Isaac (youngest) received all the promises that culturally would've belonged to Ishmael (oldest).

Esau didn't appreciate the importance of his birthright and sells it to Jacob for what seems like a bowl of stew thus fulfilling what the Lord told Rebekah 25:29-34

Isaac was the heir to the promises God made to Abraham. He would receive land, have numerous offspring and be blessed just like his faithful father was. 26:4-5

Isaac also followed in his father's footsteps when he lied about Rebekah being his sister. 26:6 It's possible this was the same Abimelech who had this scheme pulled on him once before with Abraham and Sarah. 20:2

A very similar peace treaty was made between Abimelech and Isaac as was made in 21:22. Abimelech again recognized God was with Isaac.

What stood out to you today?
