Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Genesis 43-45.  Here's what stood out to me:

The famine grew more severe and Joseph's family was out of grain. Jacob reluctantly let Benjamin go back with his other sons in order that they might all have a chance to survive. He told them to take gifts and double the money in case there was a mistake the first time.

Jacob/Israel stated "may God Almighty grant you mercy before the man", not knowing "the man" was his long lost Joseph. 43:14

When his brothers were invited to dine with Joseph they were suspicious that maybe he had realized the money was missing. Simeon was eventually reunited with them.

After being introduced to Benjamin, Joseph was overcome with emotions and had to leave the room. I can't imagine the emotions that ran through his mind...of days past and what used to be. 43:30

Joseph then tested his brothers with a silver cup. Maybe he wanted to see if they had learned anything after all these years? If they would protect Benjamin rather than toss him aside for their own gain like they did with him so many years ago? Judah was also very concerned the death of Benjamin would end up being the death of their father as well.

Joseph couldn't keep his secret any longer...I imagine he was bursting inside! He privately told his brothers who he was and that it was God who brought him to Egypt not their actions. God allowed this all to come about to save lives. 45:1-8 I immediately thought of the verse, "you meant it for evil, but God meant it for good", but I'm getting ahead of myself because that's coming in 50:20 :)

When Pharaoh heard the good news of the brotherly reunion he loaded Joseph's brothers up with gifts to last them through the famine. One thing I don't think I've mentioned yet is I really had never thought of Pharaoh as being more than one person. I always thought of the Pharaoh of the plagues (who is coming soon).  But this present Pharaoh will be one of the only Pharaohs (and maybe the only Pharaoh if my memory services me right) who shows kindness towards God's people.

Joseph sent his brothers on their way, eagerly anticipating their return with their father Jacob/Israel. When Jacob learned the truth his spirit was revived and he eagerly wished to see Joseph as well...oh the joy he must have felt!
