Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Exodus 13-15. Here's what stood out to me:

Sometimes the guidelines the Lord provided the Israelites may seem obscure or even strange to us but they always had a purpose. The Feast of the Unleavened Bread and the dedication of the firstborns to the Lord were to remind the Israelites how the Lord's strong hand freed them from Egypt and spared their sons at the Passover. 13:14-16

God already knew the Israelites tended to be fickle so He didn't lead them through the Philistine territory to keep them from becoming fearful and turning around. 13:17

Moses fulfilled the promise in Genesis 50:25 when he carried the bones of Joseph with him. 13:19

God provided the Israelites a compass per say as they travelled...a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night...allowing them to travel at all times. 13:21-22

God wasn't done with Pharaoh and hardened his heart again so that he would bring his armies to attack the Israelites. God did this so His glory would be known to the Egyptians and that there would be no doubt He was the LORD. 14:4

When the Israelites saw the Egyptians barreling down on them they questioned why they didn't just stay and serve the Egyptians. Moses ensured them, "Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you only have to be silent." 14:13 The last part of this verse speaks volumes to me (no pun intended)! A reminder to myself not to complain or even not to be hopeless when I am in the trenches...God has a purpose and a plan that surpasses my understanding...I only need be silent and trust.

The parting of the Red Sea is one miracle I have always thought would've been so majestic to see. It stood out to me during this particular reading that they actually began crossing at night. 14:21 All our childhood picture books growing up depicted it during the day. It took the Israelites all night to cross and then it was morning when God drown Pharaoh and the Egyptians. 14:24-28

The Egyptians recognized it was the LORD fighting for Israel as they were defeated. 14:25

A song was sung in celebration and remembrance of the LORD's protection over the Israelites. They recognized Him as their God. 15:2

No sooner did we leave the miraculous parting of the Red Sea and the Israelites have already forgotten God's power and are complaining of having no water. This failed trust in the Lord will be a recurring struggle for the Israelites. LORD help me to trust You as You are working in my life!

Tara Leigh actually mentioned this yesterday but I feel it fits in right here as well. "We don't need Him to help us; we need His utter and complete rescue." Lord help me to surrender my desires to You because I know You know what is best for me!
