Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Exodus 16-18. Here's what stood out to me:

After God gave His people water they then turned to complaining for food and again suggested they would've been better off in Egypt. I don't believe it's the hunger that was the problem (that will come naturally), it was the lack of trust that God would provide. They still didn't understand who God was and that He is a promise keeper! They also weren't comprehending that God's presence was with them as they journeyed and therefore He would provide ALL their needs.

God then provided quail at night and manna in the morning. God tested the Israelites to see if they would only gather what they needed for that day so that they must rely on Him providing for the next day. 16:4 Some listened, some didn't...and the excess spoiled.

God also taught them the Sabbath by providing double their needs on the sixth day and allowing them to rest on the 7th day. Again some listened, some didn't 16:22-30

God again asked His people to create a reminder of His provision by placing manna in a jar...something to remember through the generations. 16:32-33 We say often...when we remember well, we worship well. God knows just how quickly we forget things.

The Israelites continued quarrelling with Moses and complaining of thirst so God allowed Moses to strike a rock to provide them water. Moses was frustrated with their lack of trust.

The Amalekites were first to attack the Israelites after the exodus. Moses used the staff of God to defeat the Amalekites. Whenever the staff was lifted to the heavens they succeeded, when it lowered they struggled. Moses' arms had to be held up when he grew weary. This always reminds me of a picture of friends in our life who come alongside us and provide strength when we are weary through both prayer and fellowship.

Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, showed more faith in his response to Moses' recap than the Israelites who experienced it themselves firsthand. 18:8-12 Jethro, caring for his wellbeing, advised Moses to choose wise men to aid him in the decision making amongst the people so he didn't get overwhelmed or overburdened.

Throughout today's reading I kept being reminded of 1 Thes 5:18..."give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you". When our hearts are full of thanksgiving there's no room for complaining!
