Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Exodus 19-21. Here's what stood out to me:

God told Moses to tell the people in 19:4, "You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself." I immediately thought of Isaiah 40:31..."but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles." God reminded them He was with them in the waiting. He was their strength when they felt weak! If they obeyed His voice He promised to make them His "treasured possession". 19:5

God descended on Mt. Sinai so that He could speak with Moses but also so that "the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever". 19:9 God provided multiple ways for His power and presence to be known to the Israelites...How gracious is He?! The people had to be consecrated in order to even be semi near to the Lord and there was definitely preparation that had to take place to accomplish that.

God provided the Israelites with guardrails in the form of the Ten Commandments. To some what may seem as restricting, I see as loving...so that they weren't guessing their way through life...that would be unloving!

Tara Leigh pointed out that the first five commandments are vertical (how to honor God) and the last five are horizontal (how to honor others). I also loved that she pointed out that we have a general inclination to worship things...even more reason God gave us guardrails.

My study Bible helped explain the idea of slavery during these times and I thought it might be important to share. "It should be clear slaves were considered human beings rather than mere possessions. Debt was the most common reason that people became slaves. To take a destitute person as a slave could be seen as benevolent, as it guaranteed him food, shelter and some income." Very different from the more modern day slavery!

Praying for you all,

~Ann Mays
