Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Leviticus 8-10. Here's what stood out to me:

Chapter 8 described the anointing of Aaron as the first priest of Israel to oversee the tabernacle. His sons were also anointed and would oversee if their father could no longer fulfill his duties. The LORD commanded Moses throughout this ceremony and all the while Moses obeyed His every word.

In order for the glory of the LORD to appear to Aaron he had to offer his sin and burnt offering as atonement for himself and his people. The LORD did not pay favoritism to anyone...all sins needed to be paid for.

We don't exactly know the hearts of Nadab and Abihu but God did because He can see right through to the heart. These two were warned, along with all the other Israelites in Exodus chapter 30, that incense was to only be used for very specific purposes. It's possible they also tried to enter the Most Holy Place. Aaron didn't dispute their deaths either, so we know he also believed it was warranted. 10:3

God set up some roles for Aaron and his sons as they represented the priesthood. They weren't allowed to drink in the tent of meeting, they were to distinguish between the holy and profane, they were to separate the clean from the unclean and they taught God's people the law.

Aaron's two remaining sons were to give an offering and then eat it as recognition that God was providing for them but they refused. This upset Moses because he didn't feel they were setting a good example for the people. Tara Leigh pointed out perhaps Moses was concerned his last two sons would be struck down dead as well.
