Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Leviticus 11-13. Here's what stood out to me:

The LORD began to tell the Israelites what they could and couldn't eat. Some forbidden food, like animals that died on their own, were probably considered so for their own protection from diseases.

While it's hard to know the exact reason God chose certain animals over others for the Israelites to eat, it was clear He wanted them to be a holy nation, separate and set apart from the surrounding nations. Dietary laws gave God's people an opportunity to demonstrate their obedience to Him.

The people also had to be mindful of any of these animals touching anything they planned to use (clothing, ovens, cups, etc.)...if contact occurred they had to be washed immediately because they too would become unclean.

To be clear chapter 12 is not inferring that women were inferior to men. What was being addressed was the loss of blood by women and the need then for them to be cleansed.

God gave instructions to Moses and Aaron that virtually made them doctors within the camp. Those who were deemed unclean due to disease or infection were not condemned or unloved but just separated from the camp for a short time until they were healed. This helped to maintain the holiness of the tabernacle and reduce the possibility of outbreaks amongst the people. And in chapter 13 very specific rules were put in place to address leprosy.

Are you beginning to feel the burden of the Law and the weight that it carries?
