Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Leviticus 14-15. Here's what stood out to me:

From all accounts of leprosy in Scripture it is a terribly awful disease. I have read from numerous sources now that leprosy was a result of sin and not something a person randomly caught...which I was not aware of. Verse 14:34 did speak of the LORD "putting a case of leprosy in a house in the land", so it does seem to be the case. J. Vernon McGee put it this way..."The filthiness and repulsiveness of sin are represented in leprosy. The hopelessness and deadliness of sin are accurately portrayed. The leper who trudged down a hot dusty road crying out "unclean, unclean" was a reminder to the Israelite that he too, was a moral leper who needed supernatural cleansing."

There wasn't a prescription or medication given to the leper to heal him, but rather a ceremonial cleansing was the cure. But even knowing all of this, God still treated them with compassion as He quarantined them. There was not a mindset of exile but isolation with the intent for healing and reunification. And once healed they then went through the various sacrifices to be declared clean...also necessary to be near a Holy God.

I won't go into the specifics of chapter 15, but it is very evident that certain circumstances call for more sacrifice and offerings. Again with the goal of becoming clean so they could dwell with the LORD.

Tara Leigh brought up some excellent points about sacrifices...it cost something, it was a covering of sin, and it caused them to draw near. Drawing near to the LORD is crucial for any ailment...physical, emotional or mental.
