Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Deuteronomy 5-7. Here's what stood out to me:

Those who originally heard the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai have all passed on. So, it is especially important that Moses repeated the law to this new generation getting ready to enter the promised land.

He emphasized that this covenant was made with them, so it was crucial they abided by the laws and followed after the LORD. "You should be careful therefore to do as the LORD your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left." 5:3

Their focus was to be above, on the LORD not their own desires...which historically led them down sinful paths. Our focus also should be directed up, when we do so everything else will work itself out...again in God's timing.

He reminded them to remember the LORD as they enter the "good cities that they did not build, and houses full of all the good things that they didn't fill, and the cisterns that they didn't dig, and vineyards and olive trees that they didn't plant...and when you eat and are full." It was the LORD that brought their people out of Egypt and gave them all they have. 6:10-12

He told them their generational history should be remembered always and taught to their children, so they too recognized the goodness of the LORD working in their lives.

Moses reemphasized that when they go into the new land, they were to destroy EVERYTHING...otherwise the temptations would pull at them to follow other gods and marry into other religions.

He told them the LORD had chosen them for His treasured possession, not because they were great in number, but because He loved them and is a faithful, promise keeper. 7:7-8

Moses reminded them if they trusted and obeyed the LORD, He would also give their enemies over to them.
