Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Deuteronomy 28-29. Here's what stood out to me:

Moses instructed the Israelites on the blessings and curses of the covenant. If they "faithfully obeyed the voice of the LORD" they would be blessed, set high above, increase in crops and livestock, be established as holy, abound in prosperity, and heave plenty of rain in season.

But disobedience would bring curses of their crops and livestock, confusion and frustration, pestilence, disease, drought, defeat, madness and confusion, and even death. Their disobedience would lead them to serving other gods of wood and stone...they would become a horror among other nations. Eventually even participate in cannibalism!

Moses asked them to remember how God led them out of Egypt and kept them healthy through the nations they travelled through. He reminded them that the idols they saw throughout those lands made of wood, stone, silver and gold were detestable. He cautioned them to be aware of their hearts. Pride will try to sneak in and tell you you've got this all on your own. But they needed to lean on the strength of their LORD just like we do...not on their/our own understanding.
