Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Deuteronomy 30-31. Here's what stood out to me:

After walking the Israelites through potential blessings and curses he reminded them that no matter their sin, if they returned to the LORD and obeyed Him with all their heart and soul, He would show His mercy and restore them. Praise the LORD for His grace and mercy in our lives!

Verse 30:9 even says, "For the LORD will again take delight in prospering you."

Moses said it well, "It's not hard and it's not far off...the WORD is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart." A changed heart enables obedience. And being in His Word allows us to stay focused on Him, which keeps our hearts energized to be more like Him and to do His work.

But the consequences for turning our hearts away from the LORD are steep...first our heart no longer hears and then eventually we are drawn to other things (for the Israelites often it was idols).

Moses told them He was getting older and not permitted to enter the promised land. His replacement would be Joshua but even better the "LORD would go before them. He would be with them; He would not leave them or forsake them." 31:8

Then the LORD, knowing the evil and trouble to come, and knowing the Israelites would walk away, asked Moses to write a song and teach it to the people. This song was to be a witness of truth to the Israelites. It was then placed in the Ark of the Covenant...it meant that much to the LORD.
