Reflect with us:
Today's reading is Joshua 5-8. Here's what stood out to me:
Neighboring nations were beginning to fear the LORD and His people as word started to get around that the Jordan River had miraculously dried up for them to cross.
The LORD commanded the new generation to be circumcised and in doing so "He rolled away the reproach of Egypt from them"...they were set apart.
I found it interesting that the LORD still had been providing manna to them until it ceased to be replaced by the fruit of Canaan...He was always providing! 5:12
The commander of the LORD's army visited Joshua and the LORD told Joshua how to defeat Jericho. The battle strategy of marching around seven days took patience and faith on the part of God's people. And this time there was no complaining and grumbling! The people were commanded to destroy everything except the silver, gold, bronze and iron.
The spies and the LORD kept their word and spared Rahab and her family for helping them.
But things then took a turn...Achan decided to keep idols from their victory, and then Joshua acted on his own and took some of his men to invade Ai. Through Israel's loss, Joshua was angry with the LORD when 36 Israelite men were killed, but he didn't consult the LORD first on this attack.
The LORD reminded Joshua of his command not to keep idols from defeated nations. Joshua sought out the idols and Achan was stoned for bringing the wrath of God onto the people.
After the idols were destroyed the LORD told Joshua to go to Ai and that He would give it over to them. This time the Israelites conquered the land because the favor of the LORD was on them. Our way and our plans are never greater than the LORD's! He is sovereign and all knowing. It only makes sense that we trust and obey!
