Day 092- The Bible Recap
Day 092 | Judges 8-9
Today's reading is Judges 8-9. Here's what stood out to me:
After the LORD gave Gideon the victory over the Midianites, he pursued their kings who had fled in the defeat. He asked for food for his men from a couple of neighboring nations but they refused. Eventually Gideon caught up with the two kings and killed them.
The Israelites asked Gideon to be their king and his sons after him. This was the first time that the children of Israel wanted a king to rule over them. But Gideon refused. He knew that it was God who had given him the victory...it was God who should've been their King...just as God said Himself.
And in what seemed like the same breath, Gideon changed from being humble to prideful as he collected jewelry to craft a golden ephod.
Upon Gideon's death the Israelites went right back to their idol worshipping ways and still wanted a king to rule over them.
Gideon had many wives, many sons, and a son from a concubine, Abimelech. These decisions caused trouble for the nation of Israel. Abimelech wanted to be king over Gideon's seventy sons and brutally murdered them all to accomplish it.
Eventually a civil war ensued against Abimelech because there were many who didn't want him as their king. His evil ways came to an end when a woman threw a stone down on his skull mortally wounding him...even in his final breaths he asked his armor bearer to finish him so that his reputation would be saved.
He killed all his seventy brothers on a stone and God used a large stone to kill him. Lesson learned!
Deceit, wickedness, and manipulation was heavily plaguing the people of Israel!
