Reflect with us:
Today's reading is Judges 13-15. Here's what stood out to me:
When I read the account of Samson the first time around it was very eye opening to me. First, I was unaware that he was a judge. And second, I agree with Tara Leigh in that growing up he was always portrayed as a kind of superhero...when in reality he was a pridefully, wicked man.
The LORD made it clear in 13:5 that He was going to use Samson to save the Israelites from the Philistines who had been oppressing them for the last 40 years.
Samson's parents seemed to love the LORD and wanted to follow Him given their questions about how to raise Samson right.
Samson's pride and arrogance was first shown in his command to his parents to get him a certain Philistine as a wife. His parents lovingly reminded him it would be better for him to marry from his own tribe...remember that's what God commanded them to do. But Samson said, "she is right in my eyes." He clearly didn't care to be obedient to God's commands.
Samson broke several laws, both Nazirite and common, when he touched dead carcasses and also committed mass murders. The hard part to understand is that there were times when it said the Spirit of the LORD was upon him when he was doing some of those things...but I also remembered the plan God had to defeat the Philistines involved Samson as well.
Tara Leigh's explanation was helpful...God "empowers sinful people with wicked motives to accomplish His righteous plan." I think that just about summed up Samson's life.
