Reflect with us:

Today's reading is Judges 16-18. Here's what stood out to me:

I've always been perplexed as to why Samson went back and forth with Delilah when it came to the secret of his strength. He had to realize she was using him as each prior attempt failed and he had only shared the lies with her.

Maybe Samson just had a weak spot for persistent women who were able to press until they got their answer...his wife did the same thing, and he gave in.

In 16:17 Samson no longer described the LORD like he did back in 15:18, but instead said he was a Nazirite to God from the womb. This answer seemed as though it was more out of duty than of devotion and a relationship with the LORD.

However, in 16:28 he cried out to the LORD asking for revenge. It's hard to know if the LORD granted him grace in that moment or if he used Samson for a greater purpose as the Philistines were blasphemingly saying their god gave Samson into their hands. I'd like to believe it was both.

The wickedness continued in chapters 16 and 17 with instances of theft, idol crafting and worship, Levites serving men rather than the LORD, and self-governing with the lack of a king or THE King Jesus. When left to their own selfish desires there is no compassion, generosity, servitude, or love amongst the Israelites. It's whatever makes you feel good and every man/woman for themselves.
