Day 098- The Bible Recap
Day 098 | 1 Samuel 1-3
Today's reading is I Samuel 1, 2 and 3. Here's what stood out to me:
I Samuel began with yet another example of why having more than one wife was not God's plan. Much like when Jacob married Leah and Rachel back in Genesis 29, there was bickering/bullying over the number of children they had.
Hannah took her prayers of distress and desperation to the LORD. She vowed to give her child back to the LORD if he chose to bless her with one.
Eli thought Hannah was drunk because of her extreme grief and anxiety. When he realized his error, he asked God to grant her petition.
After she poured her heart and soul out to the LORD the night before, Hannah and Elkanah rose early in the morning to worship the LORD. Sometimes when we don't have the answers or don't understand the answers, all we have is worship!
It must have been very difficult for her, given that Samuel was such a young boy, but Hannah kept her word and gave her son back to serve the LORD. She then conveyed the power, holiness, goodness and sovereignty of the LORD in a prayer.
Eli's sons were very wicked. They "treated the offering of the LORD with contempt." Their father tried to warn them and convince them to change their ways but "it was the will of the LORD to put them to death." 2:25 The LORD declared they would even die on the same day for their wickedness and disregard for the laws and the covenant.
Verse 3:1 said the word of the LORD was rare in those days. How interesting he chose to speak through a teenage boy...again He used the most unlikely to fulfill His plans.
Eventually Samuel had to tell Eli the LORD's plans for his sons and his household. Eli recognized his sin and the sins of his sons and responded, "He is the LORD, let Him do what seems good to Him."
