Reflect with us:

Today's reading is 2 Samuel 1-4. Here's what stood out to me:

It's hard to believe the Amalekite who spoke to David killed Saul when Samuel 31 led us to believe he fell on his own sword and killed himself. Most likely, he took credit expecting to receive special privileges, but instead he lost his life.

David lamented over this dark day in Israel. Saul and his sons were dead; they had lost the battle, and the Philistines gained territory back that the Israelites once occupied. Israel was out of the LORD's will, and it was very evident by the outcome.

The house of Judah anointed David king, but Saul's commander made Saul's son, Ishbosheth, king over the rest of Israel. A country that was once united and encamped together was still divided and at odds...wandering far from the LORD.

Feuding continued between the house of Saul and the house of David. However, David continued to grow stronger and stronger, and Saul's house became weaker and weaker.

Abner, offended by accusations from Ishbosheth, vowed to help David become king over all of Israel. Joab, suspicious of Abner's motives, killed him.

Ishbosheth's captains ended up killing him and bringing him to David as a trophy. David called them wicked men for killing a righteous man in his own bed.

Through all of these accounts, even though most tragic, the LORD continued to put the pieces in place for David to be king over all of Israel.
