Reflect with us:

Today's reading is 2 Samuel 11-12 and 1 Chronicles 20. Here's what stood out to me:

David knew Bathsheba was Uriah's wife. David schemed to get Uriah home to be with his wife in order to cover up his sin.

Uriah's honor and loyalty to his men and the ark kept him from going home to his wife.

David continued to scheme and got Uriah intoxicated, hoping he would go home to be with his wife, but again, Uriah's loyalty won out.

Then, when all his plans failed, David resorted to murdering Uriah to cover up his sin. He was committing more sin to cover up his original sin.

Eventually David took Bathsheba as his wife, and their son was born, but David's actions "displeased the LORD." 11:27

When Nathan, by the LORD's command, told David the story of the rich man, the poor man, and the little ewe, David didn't see his sin represented until after Nathan called him out. I wonder if he was so blinded by his myriad of sins that he didn't even see them as wrong in his own eyes until it was pointed out to him.

While it's hard to understand, the LORD took the life of David and Bathsheba's son.

This tragic situation affected more than just David's life; but The LORD always gives us a means of escape from temptation. He also provides guardrails in our lives to keep us focused on His will and not our desires. Ignoring these will only lead to a path of destruction.
